Classic Homemade Eggnog

20 minยทServes 6ยทEasy

Few drinks capture the holidays quite like a glass of homemade eggnog. Rich, gently spiced, and perfect for sipping by the tree, this version skips the bottled sweetness for something much closer to what your grandparents probably drank. Make it with bourbon for the adults; leave the bourbon out for the kids.

Ingredients

  • 6 large egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3 oz bourbon (optional)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • Whipped cream for serving
  • Extra nutmeg for garnish

How to make it

  1. 1

In a medium bowl, whisk egg yolks until smooth.

  2. 2

Gradually add sugar, whisking until mixture is pale and thick.

  3. 3

In a saucepan, heat milk and cream over medium heat until steaming.

  4. 4

Slowly pour hot milk mixture into egg yolks, whisking constantly.

  5. 5

Return mixture to saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until it coats the back of a spoon.

  6. 6

Remove from heat and stir in bourbon (if using), vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, and salt.

  7. 7

Strain through fine-mesh sieve to remove any lumps.

  8. 8

Chill in refrigerator for at least 2 hours.

  9. 9

Serve in glasses topped with whipped cream.

  10. 10

Dust with additional nutmeg before serving.
