Santa's Hot Cocoa

20 min·Serves 2·Easy

After a long night hauling a sleigh through the cold, even Santa deserves something warm. This is proper hot chocolate — made with real cocoa and dark chocolate chips, finished with peppermint and marshmallows. Make enough for the whole family; nobody ever wants just the one mug.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Mini marshmallows for topping
  • Whipped cream (optional)
  • Crushed candy canes for garnish

  1. 1

Heat milk in a medium saucepan over medium heat.

  2. 2

In a small bowl, whisk together cocoa powder and sugar.

  3. 3

When milk is warm, whisk in the cocoa mixture.

  4. 4

Add chocolate chips and stir until melted.

  5. 5

Continue heating until steaming (do not boil).

  6. 6

Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and peppermint extracts.

  7. 7

Add a pinch of salt and mix well.

  8. 8

    Pour into festive mugs.

  9. 9

Top with mini marshmallows and whipped cream.
